The Old Jail/Carbon County Jail
Jim Thorpe, PA

"The Old Jail" aka the "Carbon County Jail"
Jim Thorpe, PA

Active for over 124 years finally closing in 1995 this imposing structure was the site of numerous executions & some controversy as well. Most notably a group of Irish coal miners known as "The Molly Maquires who were fighting for better conditions & pay for the workers in the mines. Some believe they were falsely accused to shut them up by the Reading Coal & Iron Company. In the late 1800's 20 of them were tried, convicted & sentenced to hang, some at this very jail.
It is said that one of them - Alexander Campell left a muddy handprint on his cell wall stating "There is proof of my words, that mark of mine will never be wiped out, it is proof of my innocence, it will remain forever to shame the county for hanging an innocent man". Sure enough, to this day they never could get rid of that print, not with repainting, sanding, plastering & even a new wall!
"The Old Jail" is an absolute hotbed of paranormal activity having housed & executed some of the most dangerous individuals in the state, & innocent ones as well. There is a considerable amount of reported activity & once you see/feel it for yourself it is certainly of no surprise. The town of Jim Thorpe is beautiful yet very haunting place & "The Old Jail" is a must see for your spooky adventures there 🍻
